A Jew who escaped Hitler's Germany and served in the U.S. Army during World War II, Klemperer is best known for his bumbling Nazi Colonel Klink on Hogan's Heroes, for which he won two Emmys. The actor, who died of cancer at 80, is survived by wife Kim, a daughter, Erika Klemperer Webster, and a son, Mark.
"I don't know what his legacy to comedy is. His legacy as a human being
is much more interesting. He wanted to make a buffon out of this dumb colonel.
He always told the producers that he didn't want [Klink] to win. That was his
pact with what he was doing." - Hogan's Heroes Robert Clary
