BERLIN -- Nearly every day at 7 p.m., Falko Sokolowski turns on the television set and shows that he is part of a new era in Germany.

"We have no connection with the war generation. We do not share their opinions and lifestyle," says the 15-year-old high-school student in Bavaria. Besides, he adds, "Isn't that Col. Klink funny?"

The latest hit show on German television is " Hogan ' s Heroes ." The 1960s sitcom -- about a group of Allied prisoners in a German POW camp -- draws nearly a million viewers a day in Germany.

The occasional Mini-Interview

This month's interviewee is Brenda Scott Royce

"Brenda Scott Royce is a freelance entertainment writer and motion picture reviewer. She is the author of Hogan's Heroes : Behind the Scenes at Stalag 13, Party of Five: The Unofficial Companion, and has written for Classic TV, Television Chronicles, Television Today, Movie Marketplace, and other periodicals."

1) How and why did you get involved with Hogan's Heroes?

When I was in high school, the show aired in reruns 2-3 times a day where I lived. I watched it constantly and began researching information about the show and the cast members. Over the next several years, I collected anything I could find about the show, with no real goal in mind. When I started seeing that there was a market for TV-related books, I decided to write a book about "Hogan's Heroes." Happily, the cast members that I contacted were very receptive to the idea, and I found a publisher that was interested without very much effort.

2) Why did you stop doing the Hogan's Heroes Fan Club?

I always felt there should be a fan club devoted to "Hogan's," but I didn't know if I would have the time or resources to run it myself. However, since no one else was doing one, I decided to start it in the Fall of 1998. I had fun doing it, especially as I gave me a reason to do new interviews with some of the cast members, guest stars, and directors. However, a lot of work was involved in putting together and mailing the newsletters, and answering all the mail. When I decided to go back to school (to get a degree in primatology) full-time, it became difficult to keep up with the club, along with my other work as an editor and writer. I didn't want to start neglecting the club and having to disappoint members by issuing only sporadic newsletters when time permitted, so I closed it down. At the time, I tried to enlist someone to take over the management of the club but was unsuccessful. So, I was very happy when Bob Nippert contacted me about doing this web site and keeping the club alive.

3) What is your current involvement with Hogan's Heroes and the Hogan's Heroes Fan Club?

Not very much ... when time permits I check out the various web sites and the newsgroup. I try to keep up with my e-mail.

4) What has been the best event in your involvement with the Hogan's Heroes universe?

It's hard to pick one ... I've been fortunate to meet many of the cast and crew members, and all have been extremely friendly and generous with their time. Walking down 5th Avenue in New York with Werner and being stopped every few minutes by fans was a real treat. Dining in a British pub with Bernard Fox, while he told me tales from 'Hogan's' and many other shows, was another experience I'll never forget. Robert Clary is a very nice man and a great interview subject; seeing him perform live at the jazz bakery a few years ago gave me a greater appreciation of his musical talent. Another noteworthy event concerned fan club members rather than the stars: a short time after the club closed down I heard from two former members who had met each other through the 'trading' column of my newsletter and had gotten married! So, in a way, I was a matchmaker.

5) What are you doing now?

I am a full-time primatology/anthropology student, and I also keep busy with freelance writing and editing assignments. In addition, I work with chimpanzees at a wildlife sanctuary.

6) What are you plans for the future?

Combining my writing/editing and primatological studies in some way.

7) What is your favorite episode of "Hogan's Heroes"?

Like most fans, it's hard to narrow it down to one. But one that jumps to mind is 'Monkey Business,' because of my interest in chimps (which are not monkeys, by the way). Freddy looked so cute dressed like LeBeau!

Brenda - Thanks so very much for your time, energy and enthusiasm for Hogan's Heroes.

For an upcoming issue - I hope to do a small interview with Robert Clary - Louis LeBeau.

Other issues may include interviews with Larry Hovis (who played Andrew Carter), Leon Askin (who played General Burkhalter) and others...
